Bulga Essex Bag
Judging from everyone’s reaction to the last time I talked about things I did in my childhood days, I’m guessing that either I was weird or everyone else was very boring. I can’t believe nobody had origami frog competitions in grade school. Oh well, perhaps not everyone had teachers that were as creative as mine. The problem now is that I keep spotting bags that remind me of things I did when I was a kid. Don’t believe me? Take this Bugla Essex Tote for example. Unfortunately, yes, I was one of those kids that tie-dyed her own T-shirts. But this bag doesn’t just remind me of that. Just looking at the picture, I am also reminded of those color changing T-shirts that would turn white when they got hot. Does anyone remember those? And although I thought tie-dying was the bee’s knees back then, you can safely assume that I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing this bag now. Maybe, just maybe, I could see this bag being used as a beach bag. But an everyday handbag? No thank you! Tie-dye might have been cool on T-shirts at one time, but I don’t recall it ever being cool on handbags (with, perhaps, the exception of a really nifty backpack).

Bulga Silver ‘Candie’ Clear Tote
So how do you Bagista’s feel over PVC clear totes? I wondered this to myself as I spotted this tote over at BlueFly (dot com). Meet the Silver ‘Candie’ Clear Tote by Bulga. Personally, I’m not a fan of the whole clear tote concept, but I don’t despise the trend either. I’m just not one to pull off a clear tote; I guess it’s a privacy issue of mine, and my insecurity with peoples’ abilities to looking (and stare) inside my bag. I feel like it’s a bit of an awkward feeling since I find my handbags’ belongings a bit personal… sometimes. Although there is no doubt in my mind that this Bulga would make a great beach tote, I can’t imagine taking this bag out on a shopping trip. Maybe if this bag had some type of design all over rather than it being so plain I would have something to look at and try to like. Instead, Bulga disappointed moi with such a plain and pricey pvc tote. I don’t know how you ladies feel, but I find its retail value of $462 to be outrageous. Even its sale price of $249.30 is a bit foolish for such a simple tote in my opinion. Do any of you ladies agree, or do I stand-alone?

Designer Purse Deal: Bulga Slouchy Handbag
Remember the all-vinyl clear Bulga tote that retailed for a $400 but looked more like a cheap non-designer purse you would find in the clearance bin at macys? Well I just discovered it’s long lost sister, the all leather with 14-karat yellow gold-plated hardware Slouchy Tote. I like this bag so much more than the clear version. It looks durable, long-lasting and doesn’t look as cheap and plastic-ey as the all-vinyl version.

The Bulga Clear Vinyl Tote
It is a rare occasion for me to be blown away by a bag produced from the brand Bulga. Their bags are often boring in design and lack appeal. Which brings me to this bag, the clear pvc plastic Bulga Tote. The all-vinyl purse doesn’t show style or quality, or even some mark or characteristic that would show it’s by Bulga. It’s just a plain plastic tote that looks like you got from Target or something. Also summer is over. Why would you sport a clear plastic tote during the fall-winter season? That’s kind of a summer thing. I say toss in the junk bin. What do you guys think?

Bulga | Tassel Hobo Handbag | View!
The designer behind the designer label Bulga (Natalia Konovalova) first stepped into the fashion world working as a model. The name for the line was originally Kono Valova but went under a name change because it didn’t blend with her inspiration behind the line. Natalia recounts the day when she changed the name from Kono Valova to Bulga – “one day out of the blue while I was casually glancing over an antique globe. I was looking at all the old names for towns in my country and my finger came down on a town called ‘Bulga’. After I looked it up I literally fell out of my chair; the English translation of Latin word ‘bulga’ is leather bag!”

Pictured above is the Bulga hobo in the (exclusive to Barney’s) color grey leather whipstitch detailing and topped off with a dangling thin strapped tassel.

It’s all about the woman. Natalia Konovalova, designer behind Bulga, was first introduced to fashion working as a model, but has been in love with women’s wear since she a was a little girl living in the former Soviet Union. Inspired by her mother, Natalia has always been fascinated by exactly what it means to be a “woman” and studied fashion throughout her teens with uncommon interest, searching for how a woman’s sense of style reflects her individual personality.

At the age of twenty, Natalia’s life changed forever when she won “Princess of Kazulkum” and was whisked away to the United States to pursue a career in modeling. It was during this time that she first became acquainted with the fashion industry and was inspired to create something of her own, “It has always been important for me to express myself,” says Natalia, “Fashion was going to be how I finally did it.”

In a courageous move, Natalia enrolled in New York City’s Fashion Institute of Technology and after four years of hard work graduated with a fashion degree in women’s wear. Fresh out of school, Natalia started to examine a fashion market saturated with overpriced hand-bags with “hand-made” looks. That is when she decided the time was right.

She started designing her bags under the name Kono Valova but wanted a name that better matched the inspiration she felt when creating her line. Her answer came one day out of the blue while she was casually glancing over an antique globe: “I was looking at all the old names for towns in my country and my finger came down on a town called “Bulga”. After I looked it up I literally fell out of my chair; the English translation of Latin word “bulga” is leather bag!

Today, Bulga is the culmination of years of experience and outstanding talent. Natalia is creating her handbags for the independent, cultured woman who is well traveled and loves the arts – a woman who is sexy, smart, confident and seductive, who knows what she wants and when and where. “It is not about an age,”insists Natalia, “it’s an attitude!”

Leather is Natalia’s favorite medium and she loves playing with the shapes and colors of her bags. The designs are dependably classic with fun, feminine accents often found inside the bags through the fabric linings. Her tailoring background can be seen in the exquisite silhouettes of the handbags.

Though she loves her designs, handbags are just the beginning. After studying the history of Gucci Natalia decided to start small and hopes that one-day the Bulga name will be a complete line of women’s clothing. Until then, Natalia will continue to focus her keen sense of style on her beautifully crafted bags.
