Joy Gryson, former Director of Design for Marc Jacobs Handbags and Accessories, has quickly made a name for herself in the handbag industry. Just a few short years ago, Gryson handbags were hitting the shelves for the very first time. Although her styles are simple and refined, the quality just can’t be beat. Some people say you can judge a handbag’s quality just by feeling how much it weighs. When it comes to Gryson handbags, you’re paying for a hefty piece of good quality leather! And with many of her handbags, you can sometimes see a touch of Marc in there. Take, for example, the Gryson Mia Leather Tote. Can you see where Marc Jacobs may have influenced the design? I think it is most notable when you look at how the interior is divided. Would owning this bag be the same as owning a Marc Jacobs? Of course not! But that doesn’t mean that this bag wouldn’t make a nice addition to someone’s handbag family. In fact, I think it would be great for someone looking for a classic handbag that can be worn several different ways.

Olivia Harris Turnlock Flap Hobo Bag
Olivia Harris handbags are all about classic style and affordable luxury. When I look at this Olivia Harris Turnlock Flap Hobo, I see exactly that. The price is similar to that of a Marc by Marc Jacobs bag of the same size, but the style is much less trendy looking. But this bag makes up for its lack of trendiness with its gorgeous patent leather (which, I might add, comes in that beautiful teal color you see pictured above). I think this bag would be great for someone looking for a classic style bag in a not-so-classic color. After all, even the most conservative people need a little pop of color now and then! My only gripe about the Olivia Harris Turnlock Flap Hobo is its awkward depth. The bag is a whopping 8 inches deep, which I think would make it a bit uncomfortable to carry. Well, at least you know you’ll have plenty of room to fit everything in there, including the kitchen sink!

The Olivia Harris Turnlock Flap Hobo measures 14″ x 12″ x 8″. It should really be called a Satchel, instead of a Hobo, since it has those two short handles on top. The bag does offer some versatility, however, with its 34″ detachable shoulder strap. The bag also features an easy access, turnlock flap closure on top. It retails for $425. Find it over at Revolve Clothing, where they offer free priority shipping everyday.

The Gryson Alexa Bag
Want a basic, black leather handbag for Fall? I know I do! And during my quest, I stumbled upon this bag you see pictured here. Meet the Gryson Alexa Bag. To me, it looks like it would make a good cornerstone that someone could easily build their handbag collection upon. The Gryson Alexa Bag isn’t too dressy-looking, nor is it too casual-looking. It is the perfect combination of slouchiness and structure. You could wear this bag just about anywhere! And to top it all off, the bag is made of really luxurious-feeling leather. But watch out! If Gryson knows how to do anything well, it’s how to make a hefty handbag. This bag is going to have some weight to it! This doesn’t bother me, however. In fact, I love it when the leather is nice and thick!

The Gryson Alexa Bag is available in Black (shown) and Olive. The bag is quite versatile with its two sets of straps. My only grip is that the longer set do not appear to be detachable. It measures 18″ x 11″ x 6″ and the two sets of straps are 15″ and 25″ in length. There are two exterior zippered pockets and the interior is lined with suede.

Check it out over at Pink Mascara, where it retails for $795.

Gryson For Target 2008

Gryson For Target 2008
Gryson For Target 2008
For those of you that are a fan of Gryson bags, but not their prices, there is a new collection in collaboration with Target that will soon be making it’s debut in select stores. The artist behind the label, Joy Gryson, has teamed up with Target to create a line of handbags that are inspired by her designs and are super affordable with prices ranging from $19.99 to $49.99. Get ready to mark your calendars because Gryson for Target 2008 will only be available in stores from April 6 to June 23 this year. The bags featured in the new line for Target include influences from common traits seen in Gryson’s main collection. These include woven detailing, optional straps, and braided handles. Also, the colors that are mainly used are green, blue, white and black.

Personally, I think that there are two sides to this. First, it is a great idea for those that love Gryson’s designs but can’t afford the price tag, which usually starts around $500 or so. This will allow purse lovers to carry a designer inspired bag that’s not actually inspired, but branched from and less expensive than the original label. And that brings me to the next side.

But what about Gryson owners? How will they feel about this designer lowering the status and cost of their label for Target, which is comparable to Walmart, for example? I have a feeling that perhaps some who own bags by Grsyon might not be particularly thirilled on the partnership with Target. Though these Target based bags are for a limited time only and will not remain in stores as a permanent line.
