When I think about the latest bags by the Marc Jacobs Collection, I think luscious leather, bold colors and extra add-on’s that will distinct your MJ’s from others. It seems like the odder it is, the better. But to my surprise, the Bal Harbor Julie bag looks quite different from all its other siblings. It lacks the quirkiness, an inventive silhouette and color… lots of it!

So as I feast my eyes on this boxy shaped flat tote, I can’t decide if I’m digging this very simple look or if I prefer the Jacobs designs as we know them. This natural grained framed tote shows the classic side Marc Jacobs has in him.

They say blue is the new black. But this Marc Jacobs 2010 Rockstar Clutch is blue AND black! What a fun combination! You would definitely have the best of both worlds with this beauty! It’s a little difficult to tell from the picture, but the main body of this clutch constructed of black hide (= pony hair). The leather flap at the front features a blue and gold houndstooth pattern, which I find to be quite stunning. You don’t see a lot of houndstooth when it comes to handbags, but I think Marc did very well.

All my life, I’ve been a devotee to leather handbags. Only straying to fabric bags for the good old diaper bag or beach bag and perhaps a utilitarian tote. I turned up my nose at canvas, satin, nylon and other non-leather bags. Oh, yes! I was a snob about Prada nylon too! I now have to apologize, admit I was small-minded and must re-frame my opinions! There are so many great new (and durable) fabrics in handbags that deserve a second look. Designers that were entrenched in leather now embrace nylon and other materials. It could be that they were simply looking for less expensive alternatives than leather or even more eco-friendly materials, but I believe they’d made some great design choices as well!

Marc Jacobs and his collection makes it on my top three of my all time favorite designers. Most of his goods are a win in my book… and then there is his “other” stuff. Feast your eyes on the Castoro Beaver Fur Shoulder Bag, a piece that arrives as freaky as any fur bag could possibly get. Although a handbag with fur on it would never make my collection, I can admire a piece that’s reasonably attractive for its exotic appeal… but this is simply horrid.
