When I first saw the Maison Martin Margiela Défilé Clutch, as it is pictured on Shopbop.com, I thought the style looked vaguely familiar. I had to think for a minute before I could put my finger on it. Then it hit me, this odd looking piece reminded me of the Alexander McQueen Squeeze It Clutch. Does anyone remember it? The clutch is rectangular in shape, with the top and bottom “sucked” in a little bit (as if someone is squeezing it). But there was definitely something different about the Maison Martin Margiela Défilé Clutch. It looked like it was being squeezed a lot! It is as if someone is giving it a huge bear hug. That is when I saw the modeling picture and I saw this clutch under a completely different light!
Those curves are not the “top” and “bottom” of this clutch. Instead, they are on the “sides”. When the clutch is being worn as a shoulder bag, this realization became even more apparent. The concave on one side literally hugs the model’s body. The concave on the other side acts as a rest for the model’s elbow as she firmly grasps the strap perched perfectly over her shoulder. The clutch is much more structured than one would think as well. The creases following the curves give this piece a look that can only be described as a pillow box. You know, like the ones you use for party favors or as a gift box for small items. Well, that certainly is unique!
