Skunk was actually the most popular fur, after muskrat, at the turn of the 20th century. All the fashionable ladies had some.
As the owner of a lush chevron striped skunk cape (from Saks also -but second hand) I have to say it is a very soft and striking fur. It is not “smelly road kill” as too many people today see it. It is just as valuable of a fur source as any other pelt, and frankly unusual and welcome, in my opinion.
Behold the beautiful rodent! Don’t be hatin’ the humble little skunk just because you may have seen one dead in the road. If you lived where minks (or cows?) were run over often, then you would think differently of them as well, I guess.
