David Galan is relatively new to the handbag scene. The California native actually studied architecture at UCLA. After moving to New York, he found himself designing the interiors of the Ralph Lauren Home showrooms. Later, he worked for Barney’s New York (under Simon Doonan) and then for Gucci (under Tom Ford). During this time, David made this amazing transformation from architect to aspiring fashion designer. Finally, in 2004, he decided to return to California to start his own accessories line that combined influences from his experiences in California and New York. The result was a beautiful collection of handbags and other accessories that are made here in the USA.
Until recently, I had not really noticed David Galan handbags. When I saw some of his latest designs pop up on Shopbop though, I found myself pausing for a moment. The David Galan Pod Wristlet was of particular interest to me. It almost looks like a deflated ball, but not in a bad way. I actually like the deep wrinkles created by ruching of the leather. The technique is more often used with fabric, so this is definitely a unique look. I also love the detachable chain wrist strap, threaded with a matching piece of leather. It is very bracelet-like, which is a feature I adore in wristlets. What an adorable little piece for those carefree summer evenings out.
